The name African francolin covers several species in the genus Pternistis, characteristic ground birds of southern African savannah, grassland and farmland edges.
- Plumage: brown, grey or reddish, usually mottled or barred for camouflage on the ground.
- Approximate weight: 300 g–1.2 kg depending on species.
- Movement: it runs quickly and, when pressed, rises in a short, noisy and explosive flight.
- Interesting fact: strong dawn calls help identify species and locate coveys.
It generally feeds on seeds, shoots and insects. Season, species, daily limits and authorised areas must be confirmed for every outing.
Where to find it
Francolins are hunted in farmland, grassland and savannah in Limpopo and other southern African destinations.
