The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is a highly adaptable African waterbird. It occupies rivers, dams, wetlands and farmland near water.
- Plumage: grey-brown, with a chestnut eye patch and breast mark; the wings show white and green in flight.
- Approximate weight: 1.5–2.3 kg.
- Flight: strong and direct, capable of covering long distances between roosting and feeding areas.
- Interesting fact: it forms lasting pairs and may nest on the ground, in trees, on cliffs or on buildings.
It is territorial while breeding and is often seen in pairs or family parties. Planning must respect safety, season, quotas and authorised species.
Where to find it
Egyptian geese inhabit wetlands, rivers and farmland across South Africa, including Limpopo.
