Giraffa camelopardalis
The giraffe (Giraffa giraffa) is the tallest land mammal. Its long neck contains seven cervical vertebrae, the same basic number as most mammals.
- Coat: a mosaic of dark patches on a cream ground; shape and colour vary by population and individual.
- Approximate weight: females 550–830 kg and males 800–1,200 kg.
- Speed: approximately 50–60 km/h.
- Interesting fact: its tough, dark, prehensile tongue may measure close to 45 cm.
The small head projections are called ossicones. Its height allows browsing above other herbivores and detection of movement at great distance.
Where to find it
Present in Limpopo and across much of the savannah of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
