Phacochoerus africanus
The warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a savannah pig recognised by facial warts, mane and curved tusks. Its body looks compact, yet its legs provide surprising acceleration.
- Coat: grey skin with very sparse hair and a dark mane from the neck along the back.
- Approximate weight: 50–150 kg, with males larger.
- Speed: close to 50 km/h.
- Interesting fact: it runs with its tail upright as a visual signal and often kneels on its wrists to graze.
It uses abandoned burrows and commonly enters backwards so the tusks can defend the opening.
Where to find it
Widespread in Limpopo and across the savannahs of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
