Parahyaena brunnea
The brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea) is a nocturnal carnivore of southern Africa’s arid and semi-arid regions. Although it scavenges, it also eats fruit, insects and small prey.
- Coat: long and dark brown to almost black, with a paler mane over the neck and back and bands on the legs.
- Approximate weight: 35–50 kg.
- Speed: around 50 km/h over a short run.
- Interesting fact: it travels long distances each night and uses latrines and scent marks to communicate territory.
It lives in clans but generally forages alone. It is highly secretive and rarely seen by day.
Where to find it
Characteristic of the dry regions of the Kalahari, Namibia, Botswana and western South Africa.
