Caracal caracal
The caracal (Caracal caracal) is a slender cat of dry savannah, scrub and rocky country. Its long black ears ending in prominent tufts are its best-known feature.
- Coat: short and plain, sandy to reddish, with pale underparts and black facial and ear markings.
- Approximate weight: 8–20 kg.
- Speed: it may approach 70–80 km/h in a short burst.
- Interesting fact: it can leap vertically close to 3 m and catch birds in flight.
It is solitary, territorial and mainly nocturnal. Exceptional hearing locates small animals even inside dense vegetation.
Where to find it
Distributed across South Africa, Namibia and Botswana; in Limpopo it occupies bush, savannah and rocky country.
