Leptailurus serval
The serval (Leptailurus serval) is a long-legged, large-eared cat specialised in hunting small animals through tall grass and wetlands.
- Coat: golden yellow with black spots and bands, and white underparts.
- Approximate weight: 7–18 kg.
- Speed: approximately 70 km/h during a short run.
- Interesting fact: it can leap close to 3 m vertically and uses hearing to pinpoint prey hidden under grass.
Proportionally, its legs are among the longest of any cat. It favours areas with good plant cover and available water.
Where to find it
Associated with grasslands and wetlands in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and other southern African areas.
