Loxodonta africana
The African savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest land animal. Its trunk combines smell, touch and breathing with the precision to handle both tree trunks and tiny objects.
- Skin: grey, very thick yet sensitive, with folds that help retain water and mud.
- Approximate weight: females 2.2–3.5 tonnes and males 2.5–6 tonnes.
- Speed: it can move at close to 40 km/h.
- Interesting fact: elephants communicate with low-frequency calls, some below human hearing, and maintain complex family bonds.
Its extensive range follows water and forage. Any use must comply strictly with conservation rules, traceability, quotas and destination permits.
Where to find it
Elephant safaris are arranged in Botswana and Zimbabwe, according to destination quotas, permits and regulations.
