Hippopotamus amphibius
The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) spends the day in rivers and pools to keep its skin cool, but comes ashore mainly at night to graze.
- Skin: grey-brown, almost hairless and highly sensitive to sun; it produces a reddish protective secretion.
- Approximate weight: 1.3–3.2 tonnes.
- Speed: around 30 km/h on land over a short distance.
- Interesting fact: it does not swim like a fish; it usually pushes and walks along the bottom before surfacing to breathe.
It is territorial in water and its night paths must be respected. Every approach requires distance, caution and professional direction.
