Crocodylus niloticus
The Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is a large semi-aquatic reptile found in rivers, lakes and wetlands across much of Africa. It is an exceptionally patient ambush predator.
- Skin: armoured, olive, grey or brown, with darker markings and pale underparts.
- Size and weight: large males commonly measure 4–5 m and weigh approximately 400–700 kg; exceptional animals can be larger.
- Movement: far faster and more manoeuvrable in water; on land it relies on short bursts.
- Interesting fact: it regulates temperature by basking and holding its mouth open, behaviour that does not necessarily signal aggression.
It can remain almost motionless and submerged with only eyes and nostrils visible. Waterside safety and professional direction are essential.
