Panthera pardus pardus
The African leopard (Panthera pardus) is a solitary, mainly nocturnal and exceptionally adaptable cat. Its strength allows it to hoist heavy prey into trees.
- Coat: gold to pale yellow covered with black rosettes; every pattern is individual.
- Approximate weight: females 30–60 kg and males 50–90 kg, with wide regional variation.
- Speed: approximately 55–60 km/h over short distances.
- Interesting fact: it is an excellent climber and uses trees to rest, watch and protect food.
Its secrecy allows it to live surprisingly close to people without being seen. Safaris remain subject to each country’s regulations, permits, quotas and authorised methods.
Where to find it
The main leopard destinations are Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia, always under current regulations and quotas.
