Panthera leo
The African lion (Panthera leo) is the most social cat. It lives in prides formed by related females, cubs and one or more males.
- Coat: tawny; adult males grow a mane whose colour and density vary with age, genetics and environment.
- Approximate weight: females 110–180 kg and males 150–250 kg.
- Speed: close to 70–80 km/h, but only in a short burst.
- Interesting fact: roars may carry for several kilometres and advertise territory and presence.
It spends much of the day resting and is most active during cooler hours. Any hunting management requires certain identification, traceability, permits and professional direction.
Where to find it
Lion safaris take place in the Kalahari and Limpopo, South Africa, subject to permits and availability.
