The Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a massive, social bovid. Mature bulls develop a solid bony “boss” joining the bases of the horns.
- Coat: dark brown to black, becoming sparser and greyer with age.
- Approximate weight: 425–870 kg, varying with sex and region.
- Speed: approximately 50–55 km/h.
- Interesting fact: herds have strong social bonds and may respond collectively to a threat.
Observation requires careful reading of tracks, wind, cover and herd behaviour. Every approach must be led throughout by the professional hunter and remains subject to permits and quota.
Where to find it
Buffalo hunting is organised mainly in Limpopo, South Africa, in authorised quota areas.
