Hippotragus niger
The sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) is notable for its powerful build and long backward-curving horns. Both sexes carry horns, though those of the male are heavier and more developed.
- Coat: females and young are chestnut; mature bulls become very dark brown or black, with white underparts and facial markings.
- Approximate weight: 160–270 kg.
- Speed: approximately 55–60 km/h.
- Interesting fact: when defending itself it may drop to its knees and use its horns very effectively.
It occupies wooded savannah close to grazing and water. Proper assessment requires a clear view of horn length, curve and bases.
Where to find it
Available in selected areas of Limpopo, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique, always subject to quota.
