Oryx gazella
The gemsbok (Oryx gazella) is a powerfully built antelope especially adapted to the dry Kalahari. Its long, almost straight horns occur in both sexes.
- Coat: grey or pale tan, with a black-and-white facial mask and dark markings on the legs, belly and back.
- Approximate weight: 180–240 kg.
- Speed: around 60 km/h at a run.
- Interesting fact: it can temporarily raise its body temperature, delaying water loss through evaporative cooling.
Its heavy build and open habitat require careful judgement of distance and angle. Females tend to have slimmer horns that may sometimes look longer.
Where to find it
Typical of the Kalahari and the arid regions of Namibia, Botswana and northern South Africa.
