Kobus ellipsiprymnus
The waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is a large antelope associated with rivers, dams and grazing near water. Males carry broadly curved, ringed horns.
- Coat: coarse and long, grey to brown; the common subspecies has a characteristic white ring around the rump.
- Approximate weight: females 160–200 kg and males 200–300 kg.
- Speed: it may approach 50 km/h when escaping.
- Interesting fact: oily skin secretions help protect its coat against moisture.
It is not aquatic, but seldom ventures very far from water. During the hottest hours it generally seeks dense cover.
Where to find it
Associated with rivers and wet areas in Limpopo, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia.
