Tragelaphus strepsiceros
The greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is one of the great icons of the bushveld. Its tall outline, very large ears and the male’s spiral horns contrast with its remarkable ability to vanish among mopane and thick scrub.
- Coat: reddish brown to blue-grey, with six to ten vertical white stripes.
- Approximate weight: 120–315 kg, with adult males appreciably larger.
- Movement: agile in dense cover and capable of clearing obstacles around 2.5 m high.
- Interesting fact: males usually darken with age and their horns may exceed 1.20 m when measured along the spiral.
It is mainly a browser and is most active around dawn and dusk. Patience, favourable wind and careful reading of openings in the bush are essential to observe and assess an animal properly.
Where to find it
Primarily in Limpopo and South Africa’s bushveld; it is also found in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
