Tragelaphus angasii
The nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) inhabits dense bush, riverine woodland and areas near water. It shows one of the most striking sexual differences among African antelope.
- Coat: females are chestnut with white stripes; adult males turn slate-grey or almost black and carry a long mane.
- Approximate weight: females 55–70 kg and males 90–140 kg.
- Movement: quick and extremely agile in thick cover, though it usually relies on camouflage.
- Interesting fact: only males develop spiral horns, which may approach 80 cm.
It commonly enters clearings early or late in the day. Dense vegetation makes unhurried identification of sex, age and quality essential.
Where to find it
Its main areas are in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Mozambique and south-eastern Zimbabwe.
