Aepyceros melampus
The impala (Aepyceros melampus) is a graceful, social antelope commonly found where open savannah meets light woodland. Males carry lyre-shaped horns; females are hornless.
- Coat: reddish brown, paler on the flanks, with white underparts and black markings on the tail and hindquarters.
- Approximate weight: 45–60 kg.
- Speed: it can approach 80 km/h over a short escape run.
- Interesting fact: its leaps may reach about 3 m high and nearly 10 m long.
Its sight, hearing and herd behaviour keep it constantly alert. The whole herd should be studied before selecting a ram, without rushing the decision.
Where to find it
Common in Limpopo and across the savannahs of South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Mozambique.
