Taurotragus oryx
The Cape eland (Taurotragus oryx) is Africa’s largest antelope. Despite its bulk, it moves with surprising quietness and stamina through savannah, scrub and open woodland.
- Coat: fawn or blue-grey, sometimes with fine white stripes; old bulls darken around the neck and chest and develop a large dewlap.
- Approximate weight: females 300–600 kg and males 400–1,000 kg.
- Speed: approximately 40–50 km/h over short distances.
- Interesting fact: despite its weight, it can clear obstacles around 1.5 m high.
Both sexes carry spiral horns. It browses and grazes on leaves, herbs and fruit, and may travel considerable distances as water and forage conditions change.
Where to find it
Found in Limpopo and across broad savannah areas of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
