Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi
The blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) is a grassland antelope endemic to southern Africa. Its unmistakable white facial blaze contrasts with the dark forehead.
- Coat: reddish brown with a purplish sheen, paler underparts and a broad white facial marking.
- Approximate weight: 55–80 kg.
- Speed: around 70 km/h.
- Interesting fact: it recovered from near disappearance through conservation and managed populations.
It favours plains and open grassland. Both sexes carry ringed horns, although males usually have heavier bases.
Where to find it
Especially representative of the Highveld, Free State and South Africa’s open grasslands.
