Connochaetes taurinus
The blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) combines powerful shoulders, a heavy head and lighter hindquarters. It is a social species forming herds of very variable size.
- Coat: slate-grey with a bluish sheen, dark vertical bands, black mane and beard.
- Approximate weight: 180–250 kg.
- Speed: more than 65 km/h and close to 80 km/h over a short distance.
- Interesting fact: movements follow grazing and water; in East Africa the species takes part in vast migrations.
Both sexes carry horns. Open ground can make distance deceptive, so the herd should be watched carefully before confirming an animal.
Where to find it
Common in Limpopo and the open savannahs of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
