Alcelaphus buselaphus caama
The red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) has an elongated head, high shoulders and a sloping rump—an anatomy built for efficient sustained running in open country.
- Coat: bright reddish brown, with a dark forehead, muzzle and portions of the legs.
- Approximate weight: 120–180 kg.
- Speed: approximately 55–70 km/h.
- Interesting fact: the horns of both sexes rise close together, sweep outward and then turn backwards.
It inhabits dry savannah and grassland. Its distinctive build and stamina allow a more sustained escape than many more compact antelope.
Where to find it
Found in the Kalahari and dry areas of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
