Hippotragus equinus
The roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) is one of Africa’s largest and most powerfully built antelope. Its black-and-white facial mask and long, tufted ears are unmistakable.
- Coat: greyish or reddish brown, with pale underparts, a dark mane and strongly contrasting face.
- Approximate weight: 220–300 kg.
- Speed: around 55 km/h.
- Interesting fact: both sexes have backward-curving horns; those of the male are heavier and longer.
It forms small groups in wooded savannah with tall grass and access to water. It is territorial and may defend itself forcefully when cornered.
Where to find it
Present in selected areas of Limpopo, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
