Antidorcas marsupialis
The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a gazelle typical of southern Africa’s dry plains. Its name refers to the spectacular leap, or pronking, displayed when excited or fleeing.
- Coat: cinnamon over the back, white on the belly and face, separated by a dark flank stripe.
- Approximate weight: 30–50 kg.
- Speed: approximately 80–90 km/h.
- Interesting fact: while pronking it opens a fold of white hair along the back and may rise nearly 2 m.
It lives in open country where keen eyesight and speed are its chief defences. Groups need patient observation to assess each animal accurately.
Where to find it
Native to the open country of the Karoo and Kalahari in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
