Damaliscus lunatus lunatus
The tsessebe (Damaliscus lunatus) has long legs, high shoulders and a sloping back. Although it can look ungainly, it is among Africa’s fastest antelope.
- Coat: reddish chestnut with a purplish sheen, a dark face and black markings on the shoulders and legs.
- Approximate weight: 120–140 kg.
- Speed: close to 80–90 km/h in open country.
- Interesting fact: it often rests on small mounds to watch its surroundings.
It favours grassland and savannah near water. Both sexes carry short, ringed, crescent-shaped horns.
Where to find it
Found in Limpopo, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia, in savannah close to water.
